‘Black Woman’s Guide’ Helps Women Address Men’s Health Issues
NPR's "News & Notes" on Thursday included a discussion with health journalist Andrea King Collier and Willarda Edwards, president of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, about their new book, "The Black Woman's Guide to Black Men's Health." The book examines how black women can help men lead healthy lifestyles without neglecting their own health.
The book stresses that cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other conditions that occur in high rates among blacks should be taken seriously, Edwards said. Black women often make the health care decisions for their families, and the information in the book will help ensure that their husbands and children are well taken care of, she said. The book also addresses the importance of routine physician visits and mental health care (Chideya, "News & Notes," NPR, 6/14).
