Catholic Healthcare West, one of the nation's largest hospital systems, is ending its governing board's affiliation with the Catholic Church and changing its name, two steps intended to help the system expand throughout the states in which it operates — California, Arizona and Nevada — and beyond (Rau, 1/23).

The Catholic Healthcare West health system has separated from the Catholic Church — though its Catholic hospitals will remain Catholic — and changed its name to Dignity Health. Under a new governance structure, the former CHW will remain a not-for-profit system rooted in Catholic tradition, but is no longer a ministry of the Catholic Church (Barr, 1/23).
