AMA Reconsiders Policy on Mandatory HIV Testing for Pregnant Women
The American Medical Association's House of Delegates has asked that the AMA board of trustees review the organization's policy supporting mandatory HIV testing for pregnant women, Reuters Health/JAMA reports. At its annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., this week, a "reference committee" reviewed the policy and recommended that the House amend the policy to make HIV testing for pregnant women voluntary. However, at the "urging" of members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the House "voted to retain the mandatory policy while asking for board review" (Peck, Reuters Health/JAMA, 12/6).
