Singapore Health Institutions to Admit HIV-Positive Individuals
Nursing homes, hospices and community hospitals in Singapore will now admit individuals infected with HIV, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports. Singapore's Health Ministry stated that health care institutions will now receive the same subsidies for AIDS patients as they do for other patients. In the past, these facilities have been "uncertain" whether or not to admit people with HIV/AIDS since the virus is a "communicable disease." But activists had "complained" that this policy was discriminatory and was causing increasing numbers of infected individuals to be left homeless and without treatment (ABC News Online, 12/10).
