Abstinence Group Finds Receptive Audience in Kenya
The Kenyan division of True Love Waits -- a U.S. organization devoted to promoting abstinence -- is finding growing support as the AIDS epidemic claims an increasing number of the country's youth, the London Independent reports. The devastation of HIV/AIDS among the citizens of Kenya has caused TLW's message of abstinence to take on an "increasing resonance" among Kenyan youth, who are joining the organization in growing numbers. TLW has targeted young people through tours of schools and universities, and recently produced two television shows "extolling the virtues of chastity." The reaction to the broadcasts was so "amazing" that the organization is seeking funding for a 13-part series, the Independent reports. The TLW message is "strict" -- no sex before marriage, a limited amount after marriage and "absolutely no contraception." While the group says it is non-denominational, it received funding for its two TV programs from the Catholic Church, which provided TLW with 13,000 British pounds to produce the shows (Walsh, Independent, 1/16).
