One Quarter of Americans Have ‘Closely Followed’ News Reports on Drug Access in South Africa
One-fourth of Americans report having "closely followed" news stories covering the "controversy" surrounding access to AIDS drugs in South Africa, according to a new poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health. The survey of 1,082 American adults also found that 65% of respondents did not know why 39 pharmaceutical companies brought a lawsuit against the South African government. Only 15% of survey participants correctly stated that the lawsuit was over a South African law that allows the country to import or produce generic AIDS drugs (Kaiser/Harvard School of Public Health Health News Index, March/April 2001).
