NPR Profiles Participant in 1991 ‘Evening News’ Protest
On Friday, NPR's "All Things Considered" featured an interview with John Weir, one of three ACT UP protestors, who on Jan. 22, 1991, interrupted Dan Rather's CBS Evening News broadcast of coverage of the Gulf War, chanting "Fight AIDS, not Arabs." Weir, whose father was a television executive at NBC, recounted in a 1993 interview with AIDS Community Television how the demonstration affected their relationship and helped his father understand Weir's participation in the HIV/AIDS movement (Adams, "All Things Considered," NPR, 6/15).
