American Sentenced to Imprisonment in Germany After Infecting Women With HIV
A German court yesterday sentenced an American man to 10 years in prison on counts of rape and "bodily harm" after he infected "at least" four women with HIV, the Associated Press reports. Stuttgart Judge Stefan Eckert ruled that American disc jockey Stoney Berly Gibbs "acted irresponsibly" by having sex with the women without using a condom, even though he knew "he carried the AIDS virus." Eckert said that Gibbs was aware that he was HIV-positive when he arrived in Germany in 1999. The court found Gibbs guilty on one count of rape, four counts of bodily harm and 20 counts of "attempted bodily harm" (Associated Press, 7/18).
