Macy’s Holds AIDS Benefit Despite Terrorist Attacks
Although many charitable events were cancelled in the wake of Tuesday's terrorist attacks, Macy's held its annual Passport fashion show and fundraiser to benefit anti-AIDS efforts on Sept. 13 in San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Organizers considered cancelling the show but decided that trying to raise this year's target of $2 million for anti-AIDS efforts "was a priority," the Chronicle reports. A Thursday dinner with benefit founder Elizabeth Taylor was cancelled, as was a Friday auction with actress Sharon Stone and former basketball player Magic Johnson. The Passport fashion show, which was launched in 1982, has raised more than $15 million for AIDS research, prevention and treatment efforts (Zinko, San Francisco Chronicle, 9/16).
