New Rapid HIV Test Launched in Kenya
IntegriHealth has launched a new rapid HIV testing kit in Kenya, the Kenyan Nation/AllAfrica.com reports. The test, called the Rapid HIV Infection Diagnosis System, can provide results in 30 seconds (Nation/AllAfrica.com, 10/2). Current HIV tests available in Kenya take several days to produce results (Lloyd, East African Standard/AllAfrica.com, 10/2). IntegriHealth Executive Director Ernest Mureithi said the test is accurate and has met requirements set by the World Health Organization. Mureithi added that the test is "ideal" for use in rural areas because it can be exposed to various temperature conditions, as it does not require refrigeration. IntegriHealth plans to market the test kits to hospitals and other health institutions, not individuals (Nation/AllAfrica.com, 10/2). Kenya is the second African nation after Ghana to use the new test (East African Standard/AllAfrica.com, 10/2).
