New York Times Profiles South Africa’s Sparrow Rainbow Village Hospice for People With AIDS

The New York Times on Saturday profiled several of the more than 80 people living with AIDS in the Sparrow Rainbow Village hospice center in Roodepoort, South Africa, outside of Johannesburg. The hospice, which opened in February 2002, takes in only the "poorest of the poor" and has admitted about 200 indigent patients so far, 100 of whom have died. The program is financed through government grants and donations and offers free health care but only basic medicines, such as antibiotics (Swarns, New York Times, 12/28).
