Newspapers Report on Mandela’s Speech on AIDS, TB, Gates Foundation Grants

Several newspapers on Friday reported on former South African President Nelson Mandela's speech Thursday about the connection between tuberculosis and HIV and on grant announcements by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. About 14 million of the 38 million HIV-positive people worldwide are co-infected with TB, 70% of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. "The world has made defeating AIDS its top priority. This is a blessing, but TB remains ignored," Mandela said. He added, "We cannot win the battle against AIDS if we do not also fight TB." Mandela said that TB is "too often a death sentence for people with AIDS," adding, "It does not have to be this way." The Gates Foundation on Thursday announced a $44.7 million grant aimed at curbing HIV-related TB and a $50 million grant to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/16).
