Los Angeles Times Examines Jamaica’s Efforts to Reduce Discrimination, Fight HIV/AIDS
The Los Angeles Times on Thursday examined how discrimination in Jamaica against men who have sex with men and HIV-positive people is hindering the country's efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. According to the Times, many HIV/AIDS advocates "see progress toward a national dialogue" about how to fight HIV in the country "but little movement toward accepting homosexuality as a way of life." Robert Carr, a former director of Jamaica AIDS Support, said, "There's still much to be done in preparing the public for this dialogue," adding, "If the dialogue is going to be effective, it has to be clear that it is an internal dialogue, not something imposed from outside influences with different agendas." About 1.2% of Jamaica's population is estimated to be HIV-positive (Williams, Los Angeles Times, 11/17).
