No Participants in Chinese Phase I Clinical Trial of HIV Vaccine Showing Ill Effects, Experts Say
None of the 49 participants taking an experimental HIV vaccine in a Phase I clinical trial launched last year in Nanning, China, is showing ill effects, according to clinical observation, Xinhuanet reports. Experts have been visiting the volunteers in groups and have visited all but 15 of the volunteers so far. The trial participants, ages 18 to 50, were given either a single experimental HIV vaccine or a combined vaccine between March 2005 and October 2005. In the coming months, experts will visit the final group and receive the recommendations of a panel chosen to evaluate the data. The Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Food and Drug Administration will decide whether to go forward with a Phase II trial of the vaccine based on the outcome of the assessment (Xinhuanet, 3/30).
