British Prime Minister Cameron To Hold Food Security Summit During Olympic Games In London
"The U.K. will hold an international food security summit during the Olympic games in London this summer, British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced in a statement to the House of Commons," AlertNet reports (Caspani, 5/23). "The move follows last week's G8 summit in the U.S., where eight of the world's wealthiest nations pledged to speed up progress on combating hunger and malnutrition," the Guardian writes, noting that President Barack Obama last week launched the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition.
In the statement, Cameron said, "This is a great combination of promoting good governance and helping Africa to feed its people. And I'll be building on this with a major event on food security during the Olympics," according to the newspaper. Details of the event have not been released, but a Downing Street spokesperson said the meeting will "look to follow up on the Camp David [G8] initiative, ... focusing on how good governance and private sector investment can help improve access to food and nutrition," the Guardian notes (Roopanarine, 5/23).This is part of the Morning Briefing, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
