Nigeria Launches Stop TB Partnership, Opens New TB Lab
Nigerian health minister, Babatunde Osotimehin, at an event commemorating the launch of the country's Stop TB Partnership, said as many as 150,000 Nigerians die each year from tuberculosis, the Daily Triumph reports (Daily Triumph, 4/29). Nearly as many new TB infections are recorded in the country annually, Lisa Piascik, an American diplomat, said last week at the opening of a new lab aimed at strengthening TB diagnosis in the country. The lab is a partnership between the U.S. government, Family Health International and the Cross River government, This Day/AllAfrica.com reports (This Day/AllAfrica.com, 4/23).
Phillipines Launches TB Center
The Phillipines government has opened a center, the first in its region, to study and train for prevention and control of Multiple-Drug Resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Asia and the Pacific Islands, according to the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation (4/29). Funded through USAID, the regional Model Tuberculosis Center, at the Tropical Disease Foundation in Makati, will work with WHO, national tuberculosis programs, local governments, the private sector, and other partners to combat TB throughout the region (U.S. Embassy press release, 4/28).
