AIDS Expert Tom Coates Leaves UCSF AIDS Research Institute for UCLA

AIDS expert Tom Coates this week resigned from his position as executive director of the University of California-San Francisco AIDS Research Institute to take a position at the University of California-Los Angeles Medical School, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Coates has led the the UCSF institute since 1996, when he founded it by pooling scientists from 50 UCSF laboratories, the city health department, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology and the University of California-Berkeley School of Public Health. Coates is taking at professorship at UCLA where his partner, Robert DuWors, will become the deputy director of the university's Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a professor in the division of infectious diseases, Coates, who is HIV-positive, will continue to perform international HIV research and train young AIDS specialists, according to the Chronicle (Russell, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/29).
